Guantanamo Bay, Cuba

Guantanamo Bay, Cuba lies on the southeastern coast of the Caribbean island. Originally the home to Taino Indians, the bay was explored by Christopher Columbus in 1494. It subsequently served as an important port during the time of the Spanish colony on the island. Though the current Cuban government regards the occupation as illegal, the United States has occupied the southern part of the bay since a treaty signed in 1903.

The southern part of the U.S.-occupied area at Guantanamo is devoted to the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. This base, often called "Gitmo," houses an infamous detainment camp, at which terrorists (most notably al-Qaeda associates) and other threats to U.S. national security are held. Despite an executive order from President Barack Obama in 2009 to close the detainment facility by 2010, the facility remains open as of 2012.
